Shoukry discusses efforts to reach permanent ceasefire in Sudan with South Sudanese FM

Foreign Minister, Sameh Shoukry, had a discussion with South Sudan on Saturday 29/04/2023 to promote and support a permanent ceasefire in Sudan.

Shoukry also addressed the recent developments in South Sudan with Deng Dau, the Acting Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

According to the Egyptian Foreign Ministry, Shoukry reviewed in the call he had with Dau the efforts the two sides exert towards reaching a permanent ceasefire in Sudan, based on the Egyptian-South Sudanese initiative that was agreed upon during the phone call of President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi and President Salva Kiir on 16 April.

During the call, Shoukry emphasised that Egypt and South Sudan are among the most affected by the ongoing conflict in Sudan, especially in light of the lengthy borders shared between the two countries with Sudan.

He also stressed that the interests of the brotherly Sudanese people remain the primary concern and goal behind the two countries’ efforts.

At the end of the call, both sides agreed to intensify communication and coordination in the coming period.

On Friday, South Sudan’s President’s Aide, Tut Gatluak, told the media that the two warring sides in Sudan, the Rapid Support Forces and the Sudanese Armed Forces, agreed to extend the ceasefire as well as to come to Juba for talks as part of the Intergovernmental Authority on Development’s initiative.
