Egyptian expert: The referendum on constitutional changes is a reflection of the reforms in Uzbekistan

By: Hazem Abdo

Central Asia expert Ahmed Trabek commented on the constitutional reform in Uzbekistan, where a national referendum is scheduled to be held on April 30 to amend the country’s constitution. He said: The far-reaching reforms, changes and innovations that are being made in Uzbekistan at the initiative of President Shavkat Mirziyoyev  in various fields for the country’s development are commendable in this time. Thanks to the efforts of the head of state, a lot of creative work has been done in Uzbekistan in recent years, and the country is taking a bold step into a bright future and joining the ranks of the developed countries of the world.

In view of these positive processes, the government of Uzbekistan must now make appropriate changes to the country’s constitution that reflect the needs of the times.

It should be noted that when updating the basic law of the country, the opinion of the population was primarily taken as a basis; Most of the suggestions people made were included in the draft. This, in turn, indicates that the Uzbek leadership rules the country on the basis of openness, transparency and democracy and pursues fair and people-oriented policies.

The increase in the number of articles in the Uzbek Constitution from 128 to 155 and the fact that the text has been updated by 65% is clear evidence that the country is on the path of democratic development.

Therefore, I consider it appropriate to assess the national referendum on constitutional amendments, which will be held on April 30, as an expression of positive reforms in Uzbekistan and the most important political event for the country.
